Vote-by-Mail Ballots to Some County Voters Delayed at Post Office

The Santa Cruz County Clerk has discovered that a cage of ballots, approximately 4,500, were labeled incorrectly by the post office in San Jose and have sat at the San Jose postal plant for a week.

Santa Cruz County Clerk Gail Pellerin started to contact the department's postal rep on Friday because she had not received her ballot nor Sample Ballot. In fact, the vote-by-mail coordinator, Tricia Webber, who managed the ballot addressing at the ballot printing plant in Porterville took a picture of her ballot after it was addressed and had not received her ballot. Webber ensured that the ballots arrived at the Santa Cruz downtown post office on Tuesday morning (Monday was a postal holiday) and were all correctly identified with the green postal label for ballots. When she had not received her ballot on Monday, October 15, she sent the postal rep her ballot image and the postal rep found no record of the ballot in the postal system.

Election officials urged the postal reps to investigate all remaining mail at their San Jose plant to determine if there were any ballots. Thanks to the insistence of the County Elections Department and Complete Mailing who manages the mailing of the County's Sample Ballots, ballots correctly prepared for urgent mailing were found inside a metal cage identified as "non-urgent".

The County Clerk has been assured by the Santa Cruz postmaster that the delayed ballots have been mailed today and should arrive in voters' mailboxes today or tomorrow at the latest. The ballots appear to be from the 95060, 95061 and 95064 zip codes.

Voters who have not received their ballot after picking up their mail on Wednesday should call the Elections Department at 831-454-2060 or email gail.pellerin@co.santa-cruz.ca.us Second ballots have been mailed to voters who were leaving town.
