Statement of KATE CANLIS, Candidate for

District Attorney – Public Administrator

County of Santa Cruz

Occupation: Former Acting District Attorney Age: 54

Education and Qualifications: As a criminal prosecutor, I will bring over 25 years of courtroom and management experience to the District Attorney’s Office – experience needed to restore justice and fairness to an office that has lost sight of both.

Two recent examples:

  • Earlier this year a man awaiting trial for three violent felonies was allowed by the DA to plea bargain down to just three days in jail. Three weeks later, he murdered his wife, Leticia Coronado.
  • Then, the DA gave a token sentence to a repeat child molester, saying she had "a very real romantic relationship" with her thirteen-year-old victim.

As Santa Cruz County District Attorney, I will ensure sure that dangerous felons serve the sentences they deserve and aren’t free to prey on the most vulnerable among us.

I’ll be an independent district attorney who’ll work to prevent family violence, stop the intrusion of gangs into our neighborhoods, and increase school safety. I’ll strictly enforce environmental laws that protect our beautiful coastline, and work to preserve the special quality of life in Santa Cruz County.

With your support, I’ll get the District Attorney’s Office back on track – and ensure that it fulfill its obligation to uphold justice and protect our communities.
