Statement of ART PEARL, Candidate for

County Supervisor, 1st District

County of Santa Cruz

Occupation: University Professor Age: 77

Education and Qualifications: The most difficult challenge for local government in the next century will be the restoration of neighborhood as an antidote to the destructiveness of an ever-growing, unmanageable, environmentally unstable urban sprawl. To meet the challenges of the next century county government must be citizen friendly and responsive. Elected officials must have a sense of humor, be courteous, respectful of all citizens, attentive listeners, accessible, and accountable. The problems we face are enormous, including: gridlock, runaway housing costs, water shortages, a livable wage beginning with parity for our county government workers and a sensible land use policy as we fill up every nook and cranny in the county. A neighborhood based community requires diverse, locally established businesses in readily accessible areas, programs that serve the neglected needs of our youth, as well as programs that meet the urgent needs of our seniors-safety, housing, transportation, health and other services. I will be that supervisor and represent all of you, whether you did or did not vote for me. I demonstrated the desirable attributes of an elected official in the 13 years I served on the Santa Cruz School Board. I ask all those who know me to spread the word.
