Statement of RONALD L. RUIZ, Candidate for

District Attorney – Public Administrator

County of Santa Cruz

Education and Qualifications: When I became District Attorney last year, I faced major challenges. Five staff attorneys had just campaigned against each other and the office was bitterly divided. Law enforcement officers needed to be assured that their work would not suffer. The public demanded effective enforcement of environmental and consumer laws. A domestic violence court was needed. And prevention programs for our community’s youth deserved an advocate in the DA’s office.

I have brought over thirty years experience in the criminal justice system to meet these challenges. I am working to bring stability and efficiency to the District Attorney’s office. I have worked to protect public safety and to promote prevention programs.

I have received endorsements from those in a good position to judge the candidates—Police Chiefs, the Deputy Sheriff’s Association, the DA Inspectors, and the Latino Peace Officers Association—as well as many community leaders from across the County’s political spectrum.

As a thirty-three year resident of Santa Cruz County, I have raised five children here and want to see a safe community for them and their children. Please join with me to solve the difficult problems we face. I respectfully ask for your vote on March 7.
