Re: November 2, 2004 Election

From: Crystal Bertheau, Santa Cruz County Elections Department

Subject: Deadlines for the November 2, 2004 ballot

The deadline for consolidating an election with the November 2, 2004 general election is fast approaching. If your governing body is scheduled for an election and/or is planning to place a measure on the November 2, 2004 ballot, you must file a resolution that does the following:

  1. orders the election;

  2. requests the Santa Cruz County Elections Department to conduct the election, and

  3. consolidates it with any other jurisdiction holding an election on that same day.

The important deadlines to note are:

  • May/June 2004 – suggested month that your governing body hold a meeting to adopt the resolution calling the election;

  • June 11, 2004 (EARLY deadline) – governing bodies are encouraged to file their resolutions calling their election by this date;

  • July 2, 2004 – Special Districts and Cities deliver Notice of Election to County Clerk

  • August 6, 2004 (FINAL deadline) – last day for governing bodies to file their resolutions calling their election.

The following documents are enclosed to assist your governing body in calling and consolidating an election with the November 2, 2004 General Election:

Under our Unified Fee Schedule jurisdictions that do not go to election due to an insufficient number of nominees will be responsible to pay the following:

  • Jurisdictions with 2,500 or fewer registered voters $ 50.00

  • Jurisdictions with 2,500 to 10,000 registered voters $100.00

  • Jurisdictions with 10,001 or more registered voters $150.00

Jurisdictions that do go to an election will be billed for your portion of the cost of that election.

Our department invites you to a two-hour workshop on Thursday, May 6th at 1:00 p.m. in the board of Supervisors Chambers, 701 Ocean Street, 5th Floor, Santa Cruz. The purpose of the workshop will be to review the procedures to consolidate your election with the General Election in November and to answer any questions you may have. Please call me at 831-454-2408 if you plan on attending.

Also enclosed is a flyer on the Candidate Information Forums that will be held throughout the county to assist candidates running for office. Please advise candidates in your district of these dates and post the flyer.
