Tuesday, October 10, is the last day to register to vote in the November 7, 2000 Presidential General Election and election officials will be burning the midnight oil registering voters.
Voters may register at the Elections Department in Room 210 of the County Government Center, located at 701 Ocean St., in Santa Cruz from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., the election officials will move to the court trailer, Department 8, in front of the Government Center and be available to register voters until the clock strikes midnight.
To be eligible to register and vote, a person must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before November 7, and not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction.
Voters should re-register if they do not remember voting within the last five years, have moved since last voting, want to change their political party affiliation, or have changed their name.
Persons interested in re-registering or registering for the first time in Santa Cruz County may also obtain voter registration cards at county offices, the Department of Motor Vehicles, social service agencies, military recruitment offices, local libraries, post offices, city halls and several local businesses during regular office hours.
The law allows the elections official to accept voter registration cards if the affidavit is signed and completed on or before Tuesday, October 10 and the affidavit is received in the mail by the county Elections Department no later than Friday, October 13.
