Midnight Tuesday is Last Chance to Register to Vote

Are you registered to vote? If not, you, have until midnight Tuesday to sign up to vote in the November 7, 2000 Presidential General Election.

If voters want to participate in selecting the first president in the new millennium, as well as deciding many other federal, state and local contests, they need to complete a voter registration form by midnight on Tuesday, October 10.

To assist voters in meeting this deadline, the Santa Cruz County Elections Department will move from its office on the second floor of the County Government Center, located at 701 Ocean St., in Santa Cruz after it closes at 5 p.m., and continue registering voters in the court trailer, Department 8, in front of the Government Center until midnight.

To be eligible to register and vote, a person must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before November 7, and not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction.

Voters should re-register if they do not remember voting within the last five years, have moved since last voting, want to change their political party affiliation, or have changed their name.

Persons interested in re-registering or registering for the first time in Santa Cruz County may also obtain voter registration cards at county offices, the Department of Motor Vehicles, social service agencies, military recruitment offices, local libraries, post offices, city halls, Nob Hill and Albertson's grocery stores, and several other local businesses during regular office hours.

The law allows the elections official to accept voter registration cards if the affidavit is signed and completed on or before Tuesday, October 10 and the affidavit is received in the mail by the county Elections Department no later than Friday, October 13.
