Monday is Last Day to Register to Vote in November Election

Voters who have not had a chance to register to vote in the November 5, 2002 election have until Monday, October 21 to complete a voter registration card and return it to the county Elections Department.

Under a new law that went into effect in January 2001, voters were given an additional 2 weeks to register to vote. To be added to the voter rolls for November 5, voter registration cards must be postmarked October 21. Or, better yet, voters are encouraged to hand deliver voter registration cards to the county Elections Department at 701 Ocean St., Room 210 or the City Clerk’s office in Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Capitola or Watsonville.

Voter registration cards are available at those locations as well as at other county offices, the Department of Motor Vehicles, social service agencies, military recruitment offices, local libraries, post offices, and several local businesses during regular office hours.

To be eligible to register and vote, a person must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before November 5, and not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction.

Voters should re-register if they do not remember voting within the last five years, have moved since last voting, want to change their political party affiliation, or have changed their name.
